Classification of Paint Booths and Their Maintenance Methods
1. Classification of Paint Booths. Paint booths can be divided into two main categories based on their methods for preventing dust contamination and removing paint mist: dry-type and wet-type. ① Dry-Type Paint Booths. These booths primarily consist of the booth structure, filters, ventilation fans, and exhaust ducts. They are characterized by their simple design, high coating efficiency, minimal paint wastage, and lower costs since they do not require water-based systems or extensive water treatment equipment. As a result, dry-type paint booths are widely adopted by medium- and small-sized repair businesses across China. ② Wet-Type Paint Booths. Wet-type paint booths come in four subtypes: water curtain, water swirl, spray, and Venturi types. For high-end automotive topcoat applications, water swirl or Venturi booths are more commonly used internationally, though they remain relatively rare in China. 2. Maintenance and Care of Paint Booths. ① All preparatory work before painting must be conducted outside the paint booth. ② Filters must be inspected regularly and replaced according to schedule. ③ Daily checks should be performed on the air pressure gauge readings to ensure the booth maintains the proper pressure range; negative pressure is strictly prohibited. ④ In dry-type paint booths, the floor should be moistened prior to spraying to effectively control dust. ⑤ Lighting conditions should be checked periodically, with weak or burnt-out lamps promptly replaced. ⑥ Exhaust fans and their motors require regular lubrication and maintenance. ⑦ Personal hygiene must be maintained—entry into the paint booth wearing dirty clothing is strictly forbidden. ⑧ After each painting session, the booth must be thoroughly cleaned, and all related equipment inside should be washed and serviced. 3. How to Properly Configure a Paint Booth. A paint booth is an essential piece of equipment indispensable for automotive refinish painting operations. Its primary purpose is to provide a safe, clean, and well-lit environment for painting tasks, ensuring that the application process remains free from dust interference, thereby guaranteeing superior paint quality. Additionally, the booth helps contain volatile paint mist within a confined space, minimizing environmental pollution. 4. Technical Requirements for Paint Booths. ① Air entering the paint booth must undergo rigorous filtration to ensure it is completely free of dust particles. ② Inside the booth, airflow must follow gravity, moving downward from the ceiling toward the floor, where it is exhausted after being filtered to become cleaner air. ③ To maintain optimal conditions, the air inside the booth must be fully exchanged at least twice per minute. Therefore, the recommended air velocity should be between 0.3 and 0.6 meters per second. Excessive airflow can lead to significant paint overspray and poor coating quality, while insufficient airflow may hinder the proper evaporation of solvents. ④ The booth must be equipped with adequate lighting to ensure visibility during painting operations. ⑤ Negative pressure inside the booth must be avoided at all costs. This can be achieved by carefully controlling the balance between incoming and outgoing air volumes, ensuring that the intake slightly exceeds the exhaust rate. ⑥ The noise level generated during booth operation should not exceed 85 decibels. ⑦ The booth must comply with all relevant fire safety regulations set forth by local authorities.
